Liverpool: Slot hails players after Marseille victory but admits consistency remains an issue

The Reds extended their unbeaten run to 13 matches in all competitions.

Arne Slot hailed his players following Liverpool‘s 3-0 victory over Marseille in the Champions League but admitted consistency remains a problem for his side.

Dominik Szoboszlai netted an ingenious first-half free-kick, before an own goal from Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli and a late Cody Gakpo strike secured a win that moves the Reds up to fourth in the 36-team table and boost their hopes of automatic qualification to the next phase.

On a pleasing night for the visitors at the Stade Velodrome, Mohamed Salah came back into the starting line-up after returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, while Slot’s men extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to 13 games.

“It’s a tricky place to go because of their fans, their players, their manager. I thought we were good,” Slot said.

“There were three, four, five moments where we took the ball off them and should have done better. We created less chances than we did on Saturday [against Burnley], but we won the game here.

“We deserved what we got tonight.”

However, the Liverpool boss said his team had not been consistent this season but added that he was aware of the reason why.

“We weren’t unlucky like we were this season. I know why we’re not consistent,” Slot added.

“When the game is open, players can show their quality. That is completely different to when you are playing a low block.

“We have struggled against low block but every time we have faced a team that wants to play, wants to press, we have played well.”

Next up for Liverpool is a trip to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday.
