European round-up: Inter win big to stay top of Serie A

It was a big night for the Italian league leaders

Inter Milan recovered from a shaky opening to secure a 6-2 win over Pisa at the San Siro, a result that moves Cristian Chivu’s side six points clear at the top of the table.

Despite controlling possession throughout the game, Inter fell behind after 11 minutes when Yann Sommer misplaced a pass from the back, allowing Stefano Moreo to curl a long-range effort into an unguarded net.

Pisa doubled their lead soon after, with Moreo rising unmarked to head home from a corner, punishing a lapse in defensive organisation.

Inter’s response began from the penalty spot. Federico Dimarco’s shot led to a handball, and Piotr Zielinski converted to reduce the deficit.

The hosts levelled shortly afterwards when Lautaro Martinez headed in Dimarco’s cross, before Francesco Pio Esposito completed the turnaround on the stroke of half-time with another header, this time from Alessandro Bastoni’s delivery.

The second half followed a familiar pattern, with Inter camped in Pisa’s half and creating chances at regular intervals.

However, it was not until the 82nd minute that the fourth goal arrived, as Dimarco volleyed home from Marcus Thuram’s cross.

Dimarco then provided the assist for Ange-Yoan Bonny, who finished well to make it five, before Henrikh Mkhitaryan added a sixth in stoppage time.

Latest from Spain and Germany

Elsewhere on Friday night there were also two games in action across La Liga and the Bundesliga.

In Spain, Levante edged a thriller against Elche, running out 3-2 winners thanks to a 96th-minute Alan Matturro winner after the visitors had equalised only moments earlier.

And in Germany, St. Pauli and Hamburg played out a 0-0 draw, a result that benefitted neither team in the standings.
